GENERATIONS INCORPORATED HONORS BOSTON’S “STARS OF SERVICE”

Boston, MA (June 2, 2005)- As Boston’s children look forward to summer vacations, so too are many older adults in the community who have spent the past school year guiding these students as mentors and literacy volunteers. In the last ten months, over 200 older adult (55+) volunteers have shined every week while tutoring and mentoring Boston students.

Retirees in Boston are making the most of their retirement and getting out into their communities to help students in the Boston Public Schools and after-school programs. With many volunteering between 8 and 12 hours a week, volunteers have provided over 22,000 hours of service over the past school year. These older adult volunteers, working in partnership with AmeriCorps volunteers, serve at 15 school and after-school sites throughout Dorchester, Roxbury, and South Boston.

On Tuesday June 7, 2005 Generations Incorporated and AARP Massachusetts are recognizing the amazing commitment of these volunteers with a Stars of Service Year-End Luncheon. Volunteers will be treated to lunch, entertainment, and a keynote address by Ms. Eliza Greenberg, Boston Commissioner on Affairs of the Elderly. The event takes place from 11:30am-2:30pm at the State Room, 60 State Street.

Generations Incorporated is a 13 year-old non-profit organization that unites youth and older adults in service to strengthen communities. Their Experience Corps Program places highly trained retiree volunteers as mentors and tutors in public elementary schools and after school programs. Generations Incorporated is a partner with Experience Corps®, a national movement that mobilizes older adults in service to make a difference in the lives of young people.

Anyone over the age of 55 can be a volunteer at Generations Incorporated and will receive training from the professional staff. There is no need for previous experience in teaching, just a commitment to help children and a willingness to devote at least two hours per week for an entire school year. For those that serve eight to twelve hours per week, a small monthly stipend is available.
