HEROES AMONG US
COMMUNITY MEMBERS COME TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
Roxbury, MA (February 28)- Everyone has a story
to tell; stories of personal struggles, great strides, and historic
accomplishments. With each new day, “yesterday” becomes
a part of history. Black History Month is a celebration of will,
spirit and perseverance. Americans have recognized black history
annually since 1926, both as a celebration of the past, and a hope
for the future.
In honor of Black History Month, Generations Incorporated will
hold a special event on Monday February 28th at the Orchard Gardens
School in Roxbury. The celebration begins at 4 PM in the cafeteria
with a “meet and greet”; refreshments provided. Then,
at 5 PM in the auditorium, scheduled events include a moving intergenerational
performance piece comprising of photography and dramatic reading
by Generations Incorporated Experience Corps volunteers, school
principals, community members, and children, all from Boston and
its surrounding communities.
Performers will read selections from interviews of youth, adults
and older adults from Roxbury, Dorchester and South Boston schools
and communities, talking about their personal contributions to Black
History. These deeply personal accounts will be interspersed with
stories honoring other African Americans who have greatly impacted
history in both big and small ways. Everyone has a story to tell
but not everyone has his or her story on paper. This is an opportunity
for community heroes to take center stage.
The Orchard Gardens School is located at 906 Albany Street in Roxbury.
This family event is open to the public and admission is free. For
more information, contact Aliza Yarrow at 617-423-6633.
Currently, Generations Incorporated operates its highly regarded
intergenerational literacy programs in 15 Boston elementary schools
and after school programs. Generations Incorporated is Boston’s
host to Experience Corps®, a national organization that mobilizes
older adults in service to make a difference in the lives of young
people.
