Experience Corps

Experience Corps® offers new adventures in service for Americans over 55. Now in 20 cities, Experience Corps works to solve serious social problems, beginning with literacy. We are the Boston host for Experience Corps, and we are now significantly expanding this model within Boston’s schools and after-school programs.

 

There are six critical elements that make Experience Corps a successful volunteer model:

  • Commitment - half of our volunteers serve more than 10 hours per week;
  • Training - volunteers receive rigorous training that aligns with school curricula;
  • Teamwork - volunteers work in small, supportive teams;
  • Critical Mass - by reaching scale and serving “deeply” at each site;
  • Outcomes - the model prioritizes achieving a significant, measurable impact;
  • Diversity - volunteers come from all walks of life, but most are local residents.

Boston Literacy Volunteer Programs Collaborative:

We played a leadership role in forming the Collaborative, which gathers the CEOs of 8 Boston-based non-profits that provide literacy support services within the Boston Public Schools. Together we are developing a coordinated strategy for implementing tutoring services throughout Boston so that we can efficiently serve the students most in need. This collaborative includes:

    • Boston Partners in Education;
    • CityYear;
    • Everybody Wins;
    • Generations Incorporated;
    • Greater Boston Jewish Coalition for Literacy;
    • Jumpstart;
    • Massachusetts Service Alliance;
    • Read Boston.

Other Nonprofit Partners:

    • AARP of Massachusetts;
    • AmeriCorps;
    • AmeriCorps*VISTA;
    • Boston Partners in Education;
    • Jewish Community Housing for the Elderly;
    • Massachusetts Coalition on Vital Aging;
    • Massachusetts Service Alliance;
    • Numerous civic associations and neighborhood organizations.
